Ask Reddit what tantric massage actually is, and you may come away more confused than when you started. One person describes it as deeply relaxing, another calls it spiritual, someone else describes it as sensual, while another insists that what people commonly call tantric massage has very little to do with traditional Tantra at all.
So which one is right? The uncomfortable answer is that several of them may be describing something that exists under the same name.
That is the real problem with tantric massage.
The same name can describe very different experiences
Search through Reddit discussions about tantric massage and one pattern appears quickly: people are often talking about completely different experiences. Some understand tantric massage as a practice centred around presence, breath, body awareness, sensuality and connection, while others use the term much more broadly, sometimes to describe an erotic massage.
Some people also make a clear distinction between modern Western “tantric massage” and Tantra as a much older spiritual and philosophical tradition. The disagreement is therefore not surprising: the term has developed different meanings in different communities, countries and commercial environments.
So asking “What is tantric massage?” is actually incomplete. A better question is: “What does this particular practitioner mean by tantric massage?”
That is where things become much clearer.
Is tantric massage just relaxation massage?
Not exactly. A tantric massage can be deeply relaxing. Slow touch, conscious breathing, a quiet environment and sustained attention can create a profound sense of relaxation, but relaxation alone does not define the experience.
A conventional relaxation massage is generally understood through its physical purpose: reducing muscular tension, supporting relaxation and creating a sense of physical wellbeing. Tantric massage can include all of that, but its focus may extend into something different: how you experience your body while being touched.
The pace may be slower, the attention more deliberate, and breathing and awareness may become part of the experience. Rather than trying to make the body “do” something, the intention may be to help the person become more present in it.
That distinction is subtle, and it is exactly why describing tantric massage as “just a relaxing massage” misses something important.
But Reddit is right about one thing
There is a legitimate reason people are confused: the word tantric is used very loosely. In Reddit discussions, people themselves point out how dramatically the experience can vary depending on the practitioner, their understanding of tantra, and what has actually been agreed before the session.
Some commenters describe experiences that sound primarily erotic. Others describe something much more focused on awareness, connection and presence. Some even debate whether modern Western tantric massage should be called “tantric” at all.
That means a person searching for a tantric massage should not assume that the label tells them everything they need to know. It doesn’t.
The practitioner matters. The approach matters. The communication matters. And the meaning given to the session matters.
Why two people can have completely different experiences
Imagine two people booking something called “tantric massage.” The first practitioner sees the session primarily as sensual bodywork, while the second sees it as a practice of slowing down, increasing body awareness and exploring conscious touch.
Both may advertise under the same name and use words such as tantric, sensual, energy, connection or presence, yet the experience can be completely different.
This is why online reviews and Reddit stories can be useful, but they should not be treated as a universal definition. A person’s experience tells you what they experienced; it does not automatically tell you what tantric massage is.
Tantra and tantric massage are not necessarily the same thing
Traditional Tantra is a broad and complex collection of spiritual and philosophical traditions with roots in South Asian religious cultures. Modern Western tantric practices are not necessarily identical to those traditions, and modern tantric massage is another layer again.
Reddit contains some interesting arguments around exactly this distinction. Some people object strongly to the modern sexualisation of the word “tantra”, while others point out that “tantric massage” has acquired its own meaning in contemporary English.
There is no point pretending this debate does not exist, but there is also no need to turn a massage session into a history lecture. For someone considering a session, the more practical question is simple:
What does the practitioner actually mean by tantric massage?
That answer should be clear before you book.
So what should you look for?
Instead of trying to find the “correct” definition on Reddit, look for clarity. A professional practitioner should be able to explain what the session involves, what the experience is intended to offer, how the session is structured, what kind of touch is included, what is not included, how communication works during the session, and what you can expect before you arrive.
You should not have to decode a collection of vague promises to understand what you are booking. And you certainly should not have to guess.
The biggest red flag isn’t sensuality. It’s ambiguity.
This is where the conversation often becomes unnecessarily black and white. People sometimes assume that a tantric massage must be either completely spiritual or completely sexual, but real experiences can be more nuanced.
Sensuality does not automatically mean something is unprofessional. Spiritual language does not automatically make something authentic. And a beautiful room, candles and soft music do not automatically make something tantric.
The important question is whether the experience has clarity, intention and integrity behind it.
Without those things, the word “tantric” can become nothing more than a marketing label. With them, it can describe a very different approach to experiencing touch and the body.
Maybe Reddit’s disagreement is actually the point
Perhaps the most interesting thing about the Reddit debate is not that people cannot agree. It is that the term itself has become too broad to explain the experience on its own.
“Tantric massage” tells you something, but it doesn’t tell you everything. You still need to know who is giving the massage, what they mean by tantra, how they work, what the session involves and what kind of experience they are creating.
That is why two people can search for the same words, book something called a tantric massage, and walk away describing two completely different experiences.
And that is also why choosing a practitioner based on the label alone is not enough.
So, what is tantric massage?
There isn’t one sentence that will satisfy every tradition, practitioner or person who uses the term. But there is a useful way to think about it:
Tantric massage is not defined simply by how much pressure is used, how relaxing the massage feels, or whether the experience is sensual. It is defined by the intention, approach and awareness brought into the experience of touch.
That is the part that often gets lost in online discussions. And perhaps that is why Reddit cannot agree: people are often answering different questions while using the same two words.
Before you book, ask a better question
Don’t simply ask: “Is this really tantric massage?“
Ask instead: “What does tantric massage mean in your practice, and what can I expect from a session with you?”
The answer will tell you much more than the label ever could.
At Tantric Touch Oslo, we believe the experience should be understandable before you ever step through the door. No guessing. No decoding vague promises. Just a clear understanding of the experience you are choosing.
